The Journey

Rock art, sacred hills, and the Delta’s wild heart

This is our most culturally rich itinerary. It begins at Tsodilo Hills in north-western Botswana — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important rock-art sites in the world. San (Basarwa) people have lived around these hills for tens of thousands of years, and over 4,500 rock paintings decorate their quartzite faces. Guided walks with a local San guide bring the site’s history, mythology and meaning vividly to life.

From Tsodilo, the safari shifts into the water world of the Okavango. You travel by 4x4 to the private NG34 concession in the Delta — an area of permanent channels, palm islands and floodplains with a low guest density and excellent walking and mokoro opportunities. Then on to Moremi Game Reserve for predator country, and finally to the Khwai Concession, where night drives and guided walks round off the journey.

You fly in to Maun at the start and out of Maun at the end — a clean round-trip that combines easily with Victoria Falls, Cape Town or the Kalahari. The safari can be run classic mobile camping for the most authentic wilderness connection, or lodge to lodge for permanent rooms and a little more polish between activities.

“Start with rock paintings older than the pyramids. End with a leopard in the Khwai woodlands. Botswana’s deepest story, told in nine days.”

Getting There & Away

Fly in to Maun. Fly out of Maun. Drive the wild in between.

Light aircraft are used only at the very start and very end of the safari. Everything in between is travelled by open 4x4 safari vehicle, linking rock art country to the Delta’s permanent waterways.

Light aircraft · Start of safari

Maun → Tsodilo Hills

Your safari begins in Maun. A light-aircraft flight of around 45 minutes lifts you over the western Delta and the desert fringe, setting you down at the Tsodilo Hills airstrip, where your guide is waiting.

4x4 safari vehicle · Day 3

Tsodilo Hills → NG34, Okavango Delta

A long transit day by open 4x4 — the road south-east from Tsodilo into the Okavango region, crossing from desert fringe to wetland. A full day’s drive with a picnic lunch en route and arrival at the private NG34 concession in the late afternoon.

4x4 safari vehicle · Day 5

NG34 → Moremi Game Reserve

A shorter game-viewing transit north-east to Moremi Game Reserve, with wildlife followed along the way. Arrival at camp in time for an evening game drive.

4x4 safari vehicle · Day 7

Moremi → Khwai Concession

A short game-viewing transit north into the Khwai Concession — one of the shortest transfers on any of our safaris, with wildlife followed the whole way.

Light aircraft · End of safari

Khwai → Maun

Your safari ends with a light-aircraft flight from a Khwai bush airstrip back to Maun, landing in time for onward connections to Gaborone, Johannesburg, Cape Town and beyond.
