The Journey

From the great river south into the Delta’s wild heart

This is the mirror image of our classic route — and for many guests, the better direction to travel. You begin on the banks of the Chobe River, where Africa’s largest elephant population gathers to drink, bathe and cross in enormous herds. From there you head south to Savuti, the legendary predator territory of Chobe National Park, before finishing in the woodlands and floodplains of Moremi Game Reserve and the Khwai Concession.

This route works beautifully for guests arriving from Victoria Falls, Livingstone or Zimbabwe, who can fly into Kasane at the start and out of Maun at the end — continuing directly to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Gaborone or the Okavango. You fly in at the start and out at the end; everything in between is travelled by open 4x4 safari vehicle, with your guide following the wildlife all the way.

The safari can be run two ways. Travel classic mobile camping for the most authentic connection to the wilderness, or choose lodge to lodge for permanent rooms, pools and a little more polish between game drives. The guiding, the routes and the wildlife experiences are identical.

“Begin with hundreds of elephants on the Chobe. End with lions and leopards in the Moremi woodlands. In between, the wildest four days in Botswana.”

Getting There & Away

Fly in to Kasane. Fly out of Maun. Drive the wild in between.

Light aircraft are used only at the very start and very end of the safari. Everything in between is travelled by open 4x4 safari vehicle, with your guide at the wheel and the landscape shifting from river to marsh to Delta.

Day by Day

Seven days in the wild

A suggested flow. Your guide will adapt each day to wildlife movement, weather and the interests of the group.

Day1
Elephants on the Chobe River in Botswana at sunset Chobe Riverfront

Arrive Kasane — Sunset on the Chobe River

Flight in

You arrive in Kasane and are met at the airport, then transferred to your camp or lodge on the Chobe Riverfront. A full safety briefing and camp orientation takes place before any activity. In the late afternoon, board a boat for your first sunset cruise on the Chobe River — hippos, crocodiles, kingfishers and, if you are lucky, elephants swimming across the channel.

Full Day in Chobe — Land of Giants

Water activity

Chobe holds Africa’s largest elephant population, and the riverfront is where they gather. A morning game drive along the floodplains is followed by brunch and a rest, then an afternoon river cruise for close-up views of elephants drinking and bathing, huge buffalo herds, and spectacular birdlife — including carmine bee-eaters in season.

4x4 transfer

A transit day by open 4x4 safari vehicle, heading south from the Chobe Riverfront into the Savuti ecosystem of Chobe National Park. This is a game-viewing day in its own right — your guide follows tracks and follows the wildlife as you go, with a picnic lunch set up in the bush along the way. You arrive at camp in the late afternoon, in time for a shower before dinner.

Full Day in Savuti — Predator Territory

A full day of game drives in prime predator country. Savuti is famous for its lions, spotted hyenas and wild dogs, and for the elephants that move through in enormous numbers. Your guide will read the morning tracks and plan the day around what has been moving overnight. Sundowners on the marsh as the light drops is one of Botswana’s great safari moments.
