The Journey

Nine days following Botswana’s water, from Delta to river

This is a safari shaped by water. You begin at the beautiful Xakanaxa Lagoon in Moremi Game Reserve, then drift to the Khwai Concession, where the Khwai River draws extraordinary concentrations of wildlife. From there, overland to the legendary Savuti Channel — which flows again after decades of dormancy — and finally to the Chobe Riverfront, where Africa’s largest elephant population gathers on the banks.

Because the route is a round-trip from Maun, this itinerary suits guests who want to return to the same international gateway at the end. You fly in to Maun at the start, travel between the wilderness areas by open 4x4 safari vehicle, and fly out of Maun at the end.

Water-based activities are the heart of this safari: mokoro excursions through the Delta channels, boat safaris on the Chobe River, and quiet hours watching hippos and birds from the water’s edge. Game drives and — in Khwai — night drives and guided walking safaris complete a rich and varied nine days.

“Every day brings a new waterway. A mokoro in the Delta, a river boat on the Chobe, and the Savuti Channel — flowing again after thirty years — waiting in between.”

Getting There & Away

Fly in to Maun. Fly out of Maun. Drive the wild in between.

Light aircraft are used only at the very start and very end of the safari. Everything in between is travelled by open 4x4 safari vehicle, with your guide at the wheel and the waterways unfolding around you.

Light aircraft · Start of safari

Maun → Xakanaxa, Moremi

Your safari begins in Maun. A short light-aircraft hop lifts you over the Delta fringes and sets you down at a bush airstrip near Xakanaxa Lagoon in Moremi Game Reserve, where your guide is waiting.

4x4 safari vehicle · Day 3

Xakanaxa → Khwai

A game-viewing transit day by open 4x4, crossing the northern reaches of Moremi into the Khwai Concession. The Khwai River is followed much of the way, with a picnic lunch in the bush.

4x4 safari vehicle · Day 5

Khwai → Savuti

A full transit day by open 4x4, from the Delta woodlands into the Savuti ecosystem of Chobe National Park — the famous channel, open marsh and rocky outcrops.

4x4 safari vehicle · Day 7

Savuti → Chobe Riverfront

Another game-viewing transit day north through Chobe National Park, arriving at the Chobe Riverfront for two nights on the banks of the river.

Light aircraft · End of safari

Kasane → Maun

Your safari ends with a return light-aircraft flight from Kasane to Maun, landing in time for onward connections to Gaborone, Johannesburg, Cape Town and beyond.
