The Journey

A slower safari — on foot, on water, and deep in the Delta

This is our most immersive itinerary. Instead of racing between distant areas, you travel a compact loop from Maun through the Khwai Concession , Moremi Game Reserve and a private concession in the Okavango Delta. Fewer long drives, more time on foot, more time on the water, and longer stays in each place.

Walking safaris are the anchor of this safari. In Khwai and the private Delta concession, your guide will take you out on foot — tracking, reading the bush, learning plant names, watching birds at eye level. These are the moments guests remember longest. Alongside the walking, you’ll enjoy mokoro excursions through the Delta channels, game drives in the predator-rich Moremi, and night drives in the areas where they’re permitted.

Because the route returns to Maun, this itinerary works beautifully for guests who want a single international gateway at both ends, and for those combining Botswana with a Victoria Falls or Cape Town add-on. The safari can be run classic mobile camping for the deepest connection to the wild, or lodge to lodge for permanent rooms and a little more polish between activities.

“Walk where the elephants walk. Drift where the Delta drifts. Eight days to slow down and truly see Botswana.”

Getting There & Away

Fly in to Maun. Fly out of Maun. Walk the wild in between.

Light aircraft are used only at the very start and very end of the safari. Everything in between is travelled by open 4x4 safari vehicle — and on foot, through the areas where walking is permitted.

Light aircraft · Start of safari

Maun → Khwai Concession

Your safari begins in Maun. A short light-aircraft hop of around 20 minutes lifts you over the Delta fringes and sets you down at a bush airstrip in the Khwai Concession, where your guide is waiting.

4x4 safari vehicle · Day 3

Khwai → Moremi Game Reserve

A short game-viewing transit by open 4x4 south into the Moremi Game Reserve — one of the shortest transfers on any of our safaris, with wildlife followed the whole way.

4x4 safari vehicle · Day 5

Moremi → Private Okavango Delta Concession

Another short 4x4 transfer deeper into the Okavango, arriving at a private Delta concession for three nights of walking, mokoro excursions and quiet water-based exploration.

Light aircraft · End of safari

Delta → Maun

Your safari ends with a light-aircraft flight from a Delta airstrip back to Maun, landing in time for onward connections to Gaborone, Johannesburg, Cape Town and beyond.

Good to Know

Eight days of walking, water and wild

A suggested flow. Your guide will adapt each day to wildlife movement, water levels and the interests of the group.

Day1
Elephant at the Khwai River in the Khwai Concession, Botswana Khwai Concession

Maun to Khwai — Into the Wild Frontier

Flight in

You are collected in Maun and flown by light aircraft to a bush airstrip in the Khwai Concession — roughly 20 minutes in the air. Your guide meets you on arrival and drives you to camp, where a full safety briefing and camp orientation takes place before any activity. Lunch, a siesta, then your first afternoon game drive along the Khwai River as the light softens.

Khwai — Walking Safaris, Mokoro & Night Drives

Walking

Khwai is one of the few areas in Botswana where guided walking safaris and night drives are permitted. After an early morning game drive along the Khwai River, your guide takes you out on foot — reading tracks, watching birds at eye level, learning about medicinal plants and animal behaviour. In the afternoon, a tranquil mokoro excursion through the quiet channels. After dark, a night drive reveals genets, civets, owls and nocturnal predators.

Drive to Moremi — The Predator Capital

4x4 transfer

A short game-viewing transit by open 4x4 south into the Moremi Game Reserve — one of the shortest transfers on any of our safaris. Wildlife is followed the whole way. You arrive at camp in the late afternoon, in time for a shower before dinner. Moremi is famous as the predator capital of the Delta, with exceptional sightings of lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog.

Full Day in Moremi — Xakanaxa & the Channels

Boat & mokoro

A full day around the beautiful Xakanaxa Lagoon. Morning game drive through mopane woodland and riverine forest, followed by a boat safari through the channels around Xakanaxa — hippos, crocodiles, African fish eagles, malachite kingfishers and, on the islands, red lechwe and elephants crossing the water. Return to camp for a siesta, then an afternoon game drive as the light drops.

Drive to the Delta — Into a Private Concession

4x4 transfer

Another short 4x4 transfer deeper into the Okavango, arriving at a private Delta concession for three nights. Private concessions offer exclusivity and greater flexibility than national parks — including walking safaris, mokoro excursions and night drives. Settle into camp, then head out for a late-afternoon activity as the light turns gold across the floodplains.

Full Day in the Delta — Mokoro & Walking

Walking

A full day devoted to the Delta. Morning mokoro excursion through the crystal-clear channels, gliding past hippos, crocodiles and dazzling birdlife. Then a guided walking safari on one of the islands — reading tracks in the sand, watching elephants at a respectful distance, and learning how the Delta’s ecosystem fits together. Afternoon siesta, then a late game drive or another mokoro as the sun drops.

Second Full Day in the Delta — Slow Safari

Water & walks

A second full day in the concession, shaped entirely around what has been happening. Perhaps an early morning walk to a leopard sighting, a long mokoro to a heronry, or a game drive to a favourite waterhole. In the afternoon, an optional night drive in search of the Delta’s nocturnal creatures. A farewell dinner in camp under the stars rounds off the safari.
