Moremi Game Reserve is the heart of the Okavango Delta and the only officially protected part of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Covering approximately 4,000 km² of pristine wilderness, Moremi is widely recognised as one of the finest safari reserves in Africa. Often referred to as the predator capital of Africa, it boasts exceptionally high concentrations of big cats—particularly on Chief's Island. The reserve's diverse habitats of grasslands, mopane forests, waterways and islands support over 450 bird species plus lion, buffalo, cheetah, leopard, elephant and wild dog.

Kazikini is a community-managed reserve and campsite operated by the Sankuyo Tshwaragano Management Trust, located about 60 km north of Maun and just 22 km south of Moremi's South Gate. The campsite offers 12 pitches, four traditional huts and full services. Adjacent is the Shandreka Cultural Village, demonstrating the traditional lifestyle of the Bayei people through traditional houses, maize beating, basketry, weaving and dancing. The concession teems with elephants, antelopes and giraffes—a perfect introduction to the Okavango wilderness.

Khwai is a community concession owned by the Khwai people, on the north bank of the Khwai River—marking the northernmost boundary of Moremi. The village is home to roughly 400 Babukakhwe (River Bushmen) related to the San people, and tourism revenue goes directly to the community. Serving as a transition between Delta wetlands and arid lands to the north, Khwai offers riverine forests, mopane woodland and seasonally flooded plains. Renowned for leopard, lion, hyena and wild dog, plus buffalo, zebra, roan, sable and red lechwe. Unlike national parks, Khwai permits night drives, walking safaris and off-road driving.

The Ancient Super-Lake

The Mababe Concession is wedged between the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park—about as raw and undiscovered as it gets. The Mababe Depression was once an ancient super-lake covering most of northern Botswana; today it is a vast, nutrient-rich grassland drawing huge buffalo, elephant and plains-game herds, trailed by lion. In summer, the plains fill with water, transforming into a 2,600-hectare wetland. The concession offers day and night game drives with regular sightings of lions stalking buffalo—even in broad daylight. A sunken hide at camp lets you watch elephants at eye level.

Where Lions Hunt Elephants

Savuti, also spelled Savute, occupies over 10,000 km² in Chobe National Park's western section. The region is famous for the mysterious Savute Channel—a river that flows seemingly at random due to tectonic activity. Dead trees lining the channel banks are a haunting reminder of drier times. Landscape ranges from mopane woodland to wide savanna, providing excellent grazing for elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, tsessebe and kudu. Savuti is known for its high predator concentrations—lion prides that hunt elephant, and the famous "fishing leopards" hunting around the channel. The green season witnesses the spectacular zebra migration.

Nxai Pan National Park is an extension of the spectacular Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, located just north of the Makgadikgadi Pans in northern Botswana. The park is particularly special for observing the annual zebra migration when thousands of animals navigate the terrain seeking fresh pastures—a wildlife spectacle second only to the Serengeti's Great Migration. In the south of the park are the famous Baines Baobabs (the Sleeping Sisters)—seven ancient baobab trees painted by Thomas Baines in 1862 that look practically identical today. The area also offers San Bushman cultural walks, providing a lens into one of Africa's oldest surviving cultures.
