The Journey

Culture, Delta, marsh and river — Botswana in full

If the Grand Botswana Safari is our signature wildlife itinerary, this is its cultural twin — a journey that opens with deep human history and closes on the banks of the Chobe River. You begin at Tsodilo Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where San (Basarwa) people have lived and painted for tens of thousands of years. Over 4,500 rock paintings decorate the quartzite faces of these four sacred hills, and a local San guide leads you through their stories, meanings and mythology.

From Tsodilo the safari drops into the Okavango with three nights in the private NG34 concession — an area of permanent channels and islands with exceptional walking and mokoro opportunities. Then it picks up the classic route through Moremi Game Reserve, Savuti in Chobe National Park, and finally the Chobe Riverfront — home to Africa’s largest elephant population. Four nights in the Delta woodlands and marsh, two more on the great river.

You fly in to Maun at the start and out of Kasane at the end — a clean one-way route that combines beautifully with Victoria Falls or Cape Town at the finish. The safari can be run classic mobile camping for the deepest wilderness connection, or lodge to lodge for permanent rooms, pools and a little more polish between drives.

“Twelve days. Rock art older than the pyramids, three nights of Delta water, predator country, and the greatest gathering of elephants on Earth.”

Getting There & Away

Fly in to Maun. Fly out of Kasane. Drive the wild in between.

Light aircraft are used only at the very start and very end of the safari. Everything in between is travelled by open 4x4 safari vehicle, threading together the country’s most significant heritage and wilderness areas.

Light aircraft · Start of safari

Your safari begins in Maun. A light-aircraft flight of around 45 minutes lifts you over the western Delta and the desert fringe, setting you down at the Tsodilo Hills airstrip, where your guide is waiting.
