The Journey

The complete Botswana — Delta, marsh, river and predator country

If you are going to travel halfway around the world for a safari, this is the itinerary that shows you everything. The Grand Botswana Safari threads together the country’s four greatest wilderness areas, with longer stays in each so you truly settle into the rhythm of the bush — instead of passing through.

You begin at the beautiful Xakanaxa Lagoon in Moremi Game Reserve, with two nights of boat safaris and predator game drives. Then three nights in the Khwai Concession — one of the few areas in Botswana where walking safaris and night drives are permitted. From there three nights in Savuti, the legendary marsh where lions, hyenas and elephants dominate the landscape. And finally two nights on the Chobe Riverfront, drifting past Africa’s largest elephant population on evening boat cruises.

You fly in to Maun at the start and out of Kasane at the end. Everything in between is travelled by open 4x4 safari vehicle — with long days of game viewing and no rushed transfers. The safari can be run classic mobile camping for the deepest connection to the wild, or lodge to lodge for permanent rooms, pools and a little more polish between drives.

“Eleven days. Four wilderness areas. Two nights minimum in each — and three in the two greatest. This is Botswana, unhurried.”

Getting There & Away

Fly in to Maun. Fly out of Kasane. Drive the wild in between.

Light aircraft are used only at the very start and very end of the safari. Everything in between is travelled by open 4x4 safari vehicle, with your guide at the wheel and Botswana’s greatest wilderness unfolding across eleven days.

Light aircraft · Start of safari

Maun → Xakanaxa, Moremi

Your safari begins in Maun. A short light-aircraft hop of around 25 minutes lifts you over the Delta fringes and sets you down at a bush airstrip near Xakanaxa Lagoon in Moremi Game Reserve, where your guide is waiting.

4x4 safari vehicle · Day 3

Xakanaxa → Khwai Concession

A game-viewing transit day by open 4x4, crossing the northern reaches of Moremi into the Khwai Concession. The Khwai River is followed much of the way, with a picnic lunch in the bush.

4x4 safari vehicle · Day 6

Khwai → Savuti

A full transit day by open 4x4, from the Delta woodlands into the Savuti ecosystem of Chobe National Park — the famous channel, open marsh and rocky outcrops.

4x4 safari vehicle · Day 9

Savuti → Chobe Riverfront

Another game-viewing transit day north through Chobe National Park, arriving at the Chobe Riverfront for two nights on the banks of the river.

Light aircraft · End of safari

Kasane → Onward

Your safari ends in Kasane. Fly out from Kasane International Airport, with direct connections to Maun, Gaborone, Victoria Falls, Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Maun to Xakanaxa — Into the Delta’s Heart

Flight in

You are collected in Maun and flown by light aircraft to a bush airstrip near Xakanaxa Lagoon in Moremi Game Reserve. Your guide meets you on arrival and drives you to camp, where a full safety briefing and camp orientation takes place before any activity. Lunch, a siesta, then your first afternoon game drive around the lagoon as the light softens.

Day2
Delta channels and palm islands in Moremi, Botswana Xakanaxa

Full Day at Xakanaxa — Lagoon & Channels

Water activity

A full day in one of the most beautiful corners of the Delta. Morning game drive through the mopane and riverine forest around Xakanaxa, followed by a tranquil boat safari through the lagoon’s crystal-clear channels. Expect hippos, crocodiles, African fish eagles, malachite kingfishers and, on the islands, red lechwe and elephants crossing the water. Sundowners on the boat as the sun drops behind the palms.

4x4 transfer

A transit day by open 4x4 safari vehicle from Xakanaxa north to the Khwai Concession, bordering the north-eastern edge of Moremi. The Khwai River is followed much of the way, drawing huge elephant and buffalo herds, predators and prolific birdlife. Picnic lunch in the bush. Arrive at camp in the late afternoon and settle in before dinner under the stars.

Khwai — Walking Safaris, Mokoro & Night Drives

Walking

Khwai is one of the few areas in Botswana where guided walking safaris and night drives are permitted. After an early morning game drive along the Khwai River, your guide takes you out on foot — reading tracks, watching birds at eye level, learning about medicinal plants and animal behaviour. In the afternoon, a tranquil mokoro excursion through the quiet channels. After dark, a night drive reveals genets, civets, owls and nocturnal predators.

Day5
Elephant at the Khwai River, Botswana Khwai

Second Full Day in Khwai — Slower, Deeper

Walking

A second day in Khwai allows the safari to slow down. Perhaps an extended morning walk to a hyena den, a long game drive to a leopard sighting your guide has been tracking, or a quiet few hours watching elephants at the river. Afternoon activities follow the wildlife. And after dinner, another night drive — the second of your stay, in a different direction, with a different guide at the spotlight.

Day6

Drive to Savuti — The Legendary Channel

4x4 transfer

A transit day by open 4x4 safari vehicle, crossing from the Khwai woodlands into the Savuti ecosystem of Chobe National Park. Savuti is one of Africa’s most storied wildlife areas — rocky outcrops, open grasslands and the famous Savuti Channel, which began flowing again in 2009 after decades of dormancy. Arrive at camp in time for a shower before dinner.

Day7
Elephants gathered at a Botswana waterhole at Savuti Savuti

Full Day in Savuti — Predator Territory

A full day of game drives in prime predator country. Savuti is famous for its lions, spotted hyenas and wild dogs, and for the elephants that move through in enormous numbers — often drawn to the marsh and channel. Your guide will read the morning tracks and plan the day around what has been moving overnight. Sundowners overlooking the Savuti marsh as the light drops.

Second Full Day in Savuti — Deeper into Predator Country

A second full day at Savuti allows the group to follow up on sightings from the day before — a pride that had moved overnight, a pack of wild dogs, or a leopard with a kill. Your guide knows the area intimately and will use this day to show you the less-visited corners, including the rocky hills that give Savuti its name and the famous San rock art at Gubatsaa Hill.

Day9

Drive to Chobe — Sunset on the River

4x4 transfer

A morning game drive before the overland transfer north through Chobe National Park to the Chobe Riverfront. Wildlife is followed along the way. Arriving in the afternoon, you settle into camp or lodge — and if time allows, board a boat for a sunset cruise on the Chobe River. Hippos, crocodiles, kingfishers and, if you are lucky, elephants swimming across the channel.

Day10

Full Day in Chobe — Land of Giants

Water activity

Chobe holds Africa’s largest elephant population, and the riverfront is where they gather. A morning game drive along the floodplains is followed by brunch and a rest, then an afternoon river cruise for close-up views of elephants drinking and bathing, huge buffalo herds, and spectacular birdlife — including carmine bee-eaters in season. A farewell dinner in camp rounds off the safari.
